if You’ve ever called for the cancellation of someone how old were you at the time? I had absolutely abhorrent views in 2009 (and crappy ones until 2012). I’d like to think people are allowed to change but I see other canceled for associating with someone who had bad views a decade plus ago. Is there no room for evolution? Having swung from far right to far left (in US parlance) I find the left way more prone to circular firing squads. Holding people accountable is good but so is room for people to grow into better people.

That's what restorative justice is for. Practically speaking, we need scopes for those conversations to happen that our communication tools don't provide yet, safety for those who were harmed, the ability to apply restitution, and communities willing to support mediators and accept change
Cancelling is community self-defense. It's important to remove people from a position to cause harm, but we'll always be on the defensive and there will always be collateral damage in form of marginalized people unjustly targeted by those with more social capital until we provide the infrastructure and community support to take the next steps
